Ubud Monkey Forest

Ubud Monkey Forest is a small rain forest dwelt by some group of monkeys and other tropical animals. It is strategically located in the hearth of Ubud Village, precisely located in the region of Padang Tegal Village, Ubud Sub district and Gianyar Regency. Monkey Forests in Balinese language called Wanara Wana are spread out in the island and Ubud Monkey Forest itself own very important function of the continuity the monkey habitat in Bali. Meanwhile the local community own important role to keep this forest naturally in order to all wild animals able to live smoothly.

The monkeys within the Ubud Monkey Forest are commonly called long-tailed macaques. Their scientific name is Macaca fascicuiaris. Macaques are found throughout Southeast Asia and many species of macaques live successfully in areas that are heavily utilized by humans. On Bali, there are Balinese long-tailed macaque troops (populations) that live in areas where they have little to no contact with humans and troops that come into contact with humans on a regular basis. However, despite the fact that many species of macaques thrive in areas that are heavily utilized by humans, there is evidence that the viability of Balinese long-tailed macaques (the ability of macaques to continue to thrive) may be dependent upon the conservation of Bali's forested areas.

Within long-tailed macaque societies, females are typically born into and remain with a single troop for life. In contrast, adult and sub-adult males may migrate between troops (young adult males typically leave their natal troop between the ages of 4 to 8 years). In order for a migrating adult or sub-adult male to be accepted into a new troop, migrating males must align themselves with a troops' females and be accepted by those females. Therefore, long-tailed macaque societies or troops are made up of 'matrilines' ('matri' is a root word that means 'mother').

The presence of sacred forest is a demonstration of the harmonious coexistence of humans and nature. In Bali, sanctuaries such as the Monkey Forest are usually in sacred village areas, often surrounded by temples. These cultural sanctuaries are not only an important part of Balinese heritage, but also an important part of everyday live. Temple festivals are regularly held for the villagers and the gods in such areas.

Knowledge about Bali

Thursday 12 January 2012

Bali may be small in size – you can drive around the entire coast in one long day – but its prominence as a destination is huge, and rightfully so. Ask travellers what Bali means to them and you’ll get as many answers as there are flowers on a frangipani tree. Virescent rice terraces, pulse-pounding surf, enchanting temple ceremonies, mesmerising dance performances and ribbons of beaches are just some of the images people cherish.

Located in the center of Indonesia’s vast archipelago, the island has an area of 5,620 sq. km, only the size of a large metropolis. The land is divided in half east to west by volcanic mountain chain and is scored lengthwise by deep river gorges. White sand beaches line the coast to the east, as well as near Kuta in the most populated area of wider lowlands to the south.  Central Ubud is one of the more beautiful spots, with mountainous scenery, lush vegetation, and the Bali’s famed terraced rice farms. The far west is the least developed area of the island, with mountainous terrain mostly given over to national park land.

And those are just some of the more obvious qualities. A visit to Bali means that you are in the most visitor-friendly island of Indonesia. There are pleasures of the body, whether a massage on the beach or a hedonistic interlude in a sybaritic spa. Shopping that will put ‘extra bag’ at the top of your list. Food and drink ranging from the freshest local cuisine bursting with the flavours of the markets to food from around the globe, often prepared by chefs and served in restaurants that are world class. From a cold Bintang at sunset to an epic night clubbing in Kuta, your social whirl is limited only by your own fortitude.

The sounds of the gamelan – the bright-sounding metal percussion ensembles that accompany just about every celebration and ceremony here- will first turn your head. Music is everywhere in Bali, from the raucous dangdut , or  Indonesia pop pouring from restaurants and shops, as well as folk and the refined classical music that accompanies the many staged dance performances and temple worship.

If you have a chance, don’t miss a performance of tradition dance like legong and barong dances, intricate ballets that present scenes from the epic Mahabarata or Ramayana. You can see in most major hotels or in Ubud at the palace. The major example of the traditional music is the Kecak, a very dramatic and visual acappella piece featuring as many as 100 men depicting a saga of monkey king and his warriors.

Ubud

Ubud is a district in Bali located 35 Km northeast of Bali’s International Airport, amongst rice paddies and steep ravines in the central foothills of Gianyar Regency. Ubud is one of Bali’s major arts and culture centers, because of that Ubud has a large tourism industry.

Based on 8th legend tells that Javanese priest, Rsi Markendya, who meditated at the confluence of two rivers at the Ubud locality of Campuan. Here he founded the Gunung Lebah Temple on the valley floor, the site of which remains a pilgrim destination.

The town was originally important as a source of medicinal herbs and plants. Ubud gets its name from the Balinese word ‘Ubad’ (medicine).

Ubud is famous for it's regularly nightly traditional dance performances, which are part of the traditional culture and are arranged for tourists on a regular schedule. Hindu-Balinese ceremonies take place on a nearly daily basis, especially in the European summer, which is the driest and coolest season here.
Ubud is popular in part today because it is the best place in Bali to break out of the tourist mode and get off the beaten path, although far from undiscovered. Hotels are plentiful; home stays and Indonesian guesthouses (losmen) are easily available to the foreign tourist. Many tourists simply base their entire stay in the city and travel to other destinations from Ubud.

Tourism on the island developed after the arrival of Walter Spies, an ethnic German born in Russia who taught painting and music, and dabbled in dance. Spies and foreign painters Willem Hofker and Rudolf Bonnet entertained celebrities including Charlie Chaplin, Noel Coward, Barbara Hutton, H.G. Wells and Vicki Baum. They brought in some of the greatest artists from all over Bali to teach and train the Balinese in arts, helping Ubud become the cultural centre of Bali.

Beside viewing any cultural and art places here, you can do some fun activities. For women you can join in cooking class. Plenty of restaurants in all prices ranges and classes are located in Ubud. For those who enjoy the local food, a walking tour of the traditional markets and herb gardens around Ubud provides clear explanation of the essential ingredients in Indonesia cooking. Combine this with a cooking class and you will learn how to recreate Ubud at home. You can also walking or jogging in the morning while looking at beautiful views in surrounding of Ubud.

So, just come to Ubud, and get some unforgettable experiences here. After you are going home from Ubud, friendly and peaceful feel will be remained in your heart. And its natural beauty seems like inviting you to come to Ubud again for the next time.
